A week like this can be a challenge for vintage watch fans around the world. This bombardment of shiny, fancy, new modern watches can feel like a personal attack. After digesting some of what was announced yesterday, this personal attack is actually more of a vindication of vintage watch enthusiasts.
The Vintage replica Watches team thought we’d give everyone a bit of a breather and moved this week’s price drop to Thursday. Next week, we will resume our normal programming schedule on Wednesday, so don’t be in a hurry.
I’m not usually one to readily profess my love for a particular watch, but Patek Philippe’s Ref. 3940 gets me every time. At first glance, this may sound like an oxymoron, but the beauty of this watch is that it is effortlessly complex. I find this model to be sheer perfection – it somehow gives an overall Zen feel among all the perpetual calendar elements that are quite closely juxtaposed. Believe me, it’s that good.
If you recall, a few weeks ago we featured a funky collection of vintage pieces from the 1980s. Interestingly enough, this Ref. 3940 is from the same era. While many watchmakers were moving towards bigger, flashier quartz movement designs, Patek Philippe stuck to what they knew best – creating world-class classic replica Rolex watches, just like the Swiss have been making for centuries. As we know, it’s easy to pile on, but it’s always harder to edit. That’s when the legendary watchmaker’s restraint and perseverance shine through.
The desirability of the first collection increases, as it is the earliest and purest execution of Philippe Stern’s intentions. With the trend of decreasing case sizes, the 36 mm case is welcome. It was slim and comfortable but had a good weight of gold on the wrist. It is also the only execution that offers only a solid snapback and a sunken subdial. The dial is a gleaming opaline silver with a hint of champagne and a rare German calendar.
This model Ref. 3940 has just the right amount of vintage and modern elements that make it easy to wear without being too precious. After all, watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed. Especially with the impeccable warmth and shine of the yellow gold case, I would go so far as to say that this could be my Holy Grail fake watch. I can only dream, but for one lucky person, you can make that dream come true in the store
